I was a slave to nicotine. I started smoking when I was 16 years old to prove a point to my husband.(stupid reason)
Over the years I became more and more addicted to the Nico demon. My kids used to beg me to quit and tell me how it was going to make me die young. I still didn't quit. I just stayed away from them when I smoked. Then I got a little older and started to have grandchildren. They teach kids in grade school the "bad effects of smoking". My grandkids started begging me to quit and telling me how it will kill me early. I still didn't quit.
About 5 years ago I started having a little trouble breathing. I have always exercised alot so this bothered me. I still didn't quit!!!
About 6 months ago after not being able to breathe very good and my throat hurting all the time, I started to talk myself into making the promise that I will quit in 2007.
In September of 2007 I was watching television and saw an advertisement on the new drug "Chantix" for smokers that wanted to quit. The ad said you would need a prescription from a Doctor (whom I stayed away from for years because they would tell me to quit smoking).
I made an appointment and he gladly gave me a prescription for "Chantix". I started taking it a week before I quit. It works great!!! I am currently on day 5 and it is getting easier. I feel so good now. I can breather better and my throat doesn't hurt all the time. I know I have quit for good this time.
My advice to anyone who is a slave to the Nicodemon!!!
First you need to Psyche yourself up to quit (This could take months).
Then go to the Doctor and get on Chantix.
Wait a week and then set a date and quit!!!
The first day is a beast, but it gets easier each day.
I also signed up for the Quit net. It helped alot. You can talk to people that have quit the same day as you and you get to print out certificates for each milestone you have completed.
I wish everyone luck. It is not easy. Remember you are not the only one doing this.
Keep with it and fight each craving with gloves on!!
Chew gum...take walks ...deep breathe.
Try to stay away from stress. Talk often to others who have quit.
Be strong you can do it!!
